Hanson's Thermalite blocks are the latest product line to be certified with the Responsible Sourcing of Materials (RSM) standard with a performance rating of ‘very good'.

The announcement follows Hanson's certification for two complete product lines - ready-mixed concrete and aggregates - in September last year and covers three additional production sites in the UK.

The BRE Environmental and Sustainability Standard (BES) 6001: 2008 covers the environmental and social issues for organisational management and supply chain management, including all the processes from the origin of raw materials, through all stages of the manufacturing process to point of sale.

For the client, specifier or end-user, this accreditation provides assurance that products conform to environmental impact specifications. Responsible sourcing is recognised within the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) and BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), counting towards the credits required to assess the code level of a building.

Martin Crow, Hanson UK's head of sustainability, said: "Achieving this certificate for our Thermalite range is the next step in our goal to obtaining the standard across all our sites and product lines."
