Age charity says housing report misses 'bigger picture'
Charity organisation Help the Aged and Age Concern has criticised a report by the ministerial working group on sheltered housing.
According to the charity, the report, which focused on support services for those in sheltered accommodation including older people, failed to "recognise the bigger picture".
While the organisation, which is due to be renamed Age UK later this year, applauded the government's efforts in issuing guidance surrounding the complaints procedures of sheltered housing, it said their were still concerns to be met in regards to how housing is financed.
Joe Oldman, policy adviser on housing for the charity, said there needs to be more stability in the services which are offered in order for residents to know where they stand.
"If we are talking about retirement housing there needs to be some kind of guarantee or settlement, so that people who move into that kind of housing have a basic sense of the core service they will get," he said.
Amy Swan, policy officer at the National Housing Federation, added: "As this report highlights, quality sheltered housing provision relies on pro-active partnership working between local authorities, housing organisations and service providers - with residents at the heart of this partnership."
The ministerial working group on sheltered housing was created last year with the intention of exploring new methods of improving the lives of those who reside in sheltered accommodation.
