Council house rent increases to be halved

Social housing tenants will eventually pay the same amount of rent for similar properties in similar areas whether renting through the local authority or a housing association.

This is the claim of Housing Minister John Healey, who said this was the government's long-term convergence aim.

In the short-term, the Minister has announced guidelines which will see rent increases halved for 2010-11.

Mr Healey said: "This government's priority during this downturn has been, and will continue to be, ensuring that council rents remain as affordable and fair as possible to tenants.

"This is why for the second year running we have decided to halve the guideline rents increase to 3.1 per cent. This has only been achieved at a cost to central government, but it was the right thing to do."

Mr Healey confirmed that as yet there is "no fixed date" for when the housing association and local authorities are set to converge, but said tenants would not face "steep rent increases" beyond 2011 when the move is finally made.
