Scotland announces new social housing investment
Local authorities in Scotland have been urged to submit funding applications by the end of April in order to receive part of the government's recently-announced social housing investment.
Earlier this week, Alex Neil, Minister for Housing and Communities, unveiled a £25 million funding pot to assist in building "a new generation of council houses".
The new investment takes the government's council housing spend to £75 million since April last year.
Mr Neil said the investment would act as a "boost" to other "positive measures" that the government has made.
"We recently proposed radical legislative change that will end Right to Buy on new build social housing, and save up to 18,000 homes in the social rented sector over the next ten years," he said.
"[This] announcement adds more weight to those positive measures, helping to boost supply and acting as an incentive to build a new generation of council houses in Scotland."
Councillor Harry McGuigan, a spokesperson for the Community Wellbeing and Safety Executive Group said the investment, coupled with local authorities' own funding, would "kick start" developments and see "even more much needed affordable homes" being built in the country.
